What is Pilates?
There is more to Pilates than developing “strong abdominals” or improving “core strength”. Pilates is an exercise method which focuses on elongating, stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve muscle strength, balance, flexibility and posture.
Classes will focus on specific areas individually whilst using exercises which integrate the whole body to re-educate and restore it to optimum function – it is this holistic approach that sets Pilates apart from many other forms of exercise.
Chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists and GPs recommend Pilates as being one of the safest forms of exercise, and indeed one of the most beneficial for everyone regardless of age and fitness level.
Pilates was developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates, initially as a form of exercise for himself to strengthen his own body. After the war he moved to the USA and opened a body conditioning studio in New York in 1926 – drawing a diverse crowd of all ages to his studio, from dancers and circus performers to actors, musicians and business people.
Since then, Pilates has steadily grown in popularity and nowadays, Pilates is practiced by millions of people around the world.
The method has been developed over the years, with teachers adapting some of Pilate’s original exercises in line with current research and understanding of the body. Today these original exercises are taught alongside an evolved form of Pilates exercises.
